Cairns, AU – Friday, Mar 7th, 2014

I had a good night sleep for a change.  I haven’t had many on this trip.  I have breakfast at Macaroon on Grafton Street down from my lodging.  The front and side entrance are both accessible.  The door for the front entrance is a bit heavy.  They have no bathrooms on site.  After breakfast, I head back and get laundry done while updating the places I’ve been on my website.  It’s early afternoon and I head down to the waterfront.  I wheel around the waterfront to the Esplanade funship, lagoon, north wharf, marlin wharf and Fogarty Park.  The entire waterfront is very accessible with the boardwalk being flat and easy to wheel around.  There is an accessible bathroom located by the lagoon pool that requires a key from a lifeguard or lagoon worker.

With mom and dad coming in town tomorrow, I head to the visitor information center to get information on tours around Cairns.  The two tours I’m interested in doing are Kuranda and Daintree.  They also suggest a rainforest, waterfalls and Paronella Park tour.  I then go talk with Allen at TUSA T6 dive center about scuba diving.  My parents have come to Cairns to see me and so my dad and I can go diving.  It is the off season so they have buy 2 dives get the 3rd dive free.  It is almost 4:00pm and the dive boat is due back between 4pm and 4:30pm.  I wheel back to Marlin Wharf to check out the dive boat.  The stern has 5 steps to a flat area with a seating platform that lowers into the water.  It looks like I should be able to bump myself up and down the steps to the flat area.  When getting out of the water I can sit on the seating platform then transfer to the flay area.  We’ll see if it works the way I have planned.

I wheel back up by my backpackers to find a place to eat dinner.  I find Cactus Jack’s, a Mexican restaurant on the corner of Shields St. and Sheridan St.  It is accessible inside the restaurant with an accessible bathroom.  I have dinner on the outside eating area on the walkway.  While I was in Darwin Matt suggested I hit Gilligan’s, a backpackers resort, I head over for drinks after dinner.  Gilligan’s is huge, with a bar area inside, a big deck with a bar and pool plus a bar upstairs.  It is on Grafton St. 2 blocks from where I’m staying.  This may be my nightly stop for drinks while I’m in Cairns.  It is accessible with a ramp to the bar area and an accessible bathroom up front in the inside bar.
